ABOUT
Tupac Shakur
Tupac Shakur, also known by his stage names 2Pac and Makaveli, was born Lesane Parish Crooks on June 16, 1971. He is regarded as one of the most influential rappers of all time. His career spanned from the late 1980s to 1990s, which saw four studio albums while he was still alive. He died at aged 25 on September 13, 1996, though his legacy continues, used as a symbol for fighting racism. His music leans into socially conscious hip hop, where he addresses issues of police brutality, teenage pregnancy, poverty, and systemic oppression.

Since his death, his music has been posthumously published, which included six more studio albums and a Greatest Hits album that was certified RIAA Diamond in 2014. Additionally, there has been several documentaries released, including Tupac: Resurrection (2003), All Eyez on Me (2017), Unsolved (2018), and Dear Mama (2023).

FEATURED SONG
"Dear Mama" is a song by 2Pac, released on February 21, 1995, as the lead single from his album Me Against the World (1995). It is in tribute to his mother, Afeni Shakur, which details his love and appreciation for her. In 2009, the song was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, who deemed it a work that is "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States", making it the first hip hop recording by a soloist to be inducted.

DID YOU KNOW?
  • That his motto, "Thug Life," is an acronym for The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everyone? This means "What you feed us as seeds, grows and blows up in your face."
  • That his stage name 2Pac was tattooed on the left side of his chest? He was 18 years old when he got it.
  • That he studied drama, ballet, and dance at Baltimore School for the Arts? It was also the place where he became friends with Jada Pinkett Smith.
  • That his role in Juice became his breakthrough and major debut as an actor? Initially he wasn't even considered for the role, but entered the casting director's office to audition.
  • That he was a roadie and dancer for Digital Underground before joining the group? He also formed the hip hop collective Strictly Dope with fellow rapper Ray Luv and, later on, founded Outlawz.
  • That he once dated Madonna? According to a letter he wrote while in prison, he broke things off because of their difference in race, not wanting to jeopardize her career or let the Black community down.
  • That he auditioned for Forrest Gump? He read the part of Bubba but the role was given to Mykelti Williamson instead.
  • That in November 1994, he was robbed and shot five times? One of the shooters, Dexter Isaac, admitted it was given by the orders of record executive James "Jimmy Henchman" Rosemond. 2Pac would sing in "Against All Odds," 'Promised to payback, Jimmy Henchman, in due time.'
  • That gang member Orlando Anderson was rumored to be Tupac's killer? He was the prime suspect who was also a Crips gang member.
  • That his alter-ego, Makaveli, was named after Niccolo Machiavelli? Machiavelli was quoted, "Fake your death to fool your enemies," which is why some believe Tupac is alive.
  • That he has been cited as an inspiration by rappers J. Cole, The Game, Eminem, Meek Mill, and Kendrick Lamar?
