Kitarō, the last of the elite yōkai family the Ghost Tribe, is born out of the graveyard after his mother dies and is buried. His father, driven by a desire to protect his son, uses the last of his spiritual energy to create a new body for himself out of the last piece of living tissue on his corpse: his eyeball. Now, father and son dwell in the GeGeGe Forest and fight to protect humans from evil yōkai. Assisted by his allies the Kitarō Family (and sometimes Nezumi-Otoko) and armed with an assortment of ghoulish powers and fantastic weapons, he takes on villains such as Nurarihyon, Backbeard and the 808 Tanuki (and sometimes Nezumi-Otoko). Created in 1960, the original GeGeGe no Kitarō manga became a massive franchise that has spawned seven anime adaptations, two live action theatrical films, numerous additional manga series and more. |
