The Archangel Corps is a faction introduced in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.
Overview
The Archangel Corps is a military unit serving aboard the first Archangel-class assault battleship, the Archangel. Formed under the Earth Alliance's G Project, the Archangel Corps functioned as an independent unit, originally within the OMNI Enforcer, and was briefly attached to the 8th Space Fleet before the force's destruction. The crew defected from the Earth Alliance following Operation Spitbreak and later formed part of the Three Ships Alliance. During the latter half of the Second Alliance-PLANT War, the group was officially incorporated into the Orb National Defense Force, with the Archangel designated as the flagship of Orb's Second Space Fleet.
During the First Alliance-PLANT War, the unit's officers corps was composed of Murrue Ramius as the Archangel's captain, with Natarle Badgiruel as her executive officer and Mu La Flaga commanding the mobile weapon forces. As a result of the original crew's deaths, the ship was staffed by a mix of junior military personnel and civilian volunteers who later officially joined the unit. Through continuous battle, the crew quickly developed proficient combat abilities on par with trained personnel. The mobile weapon force was centered around the advanced prototype GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, and supported by the TS-MA2mod.00 Moebius Zero mobile armor in space, and two FX-550 Skygraspers on Earth. The GAT-X103 Buster Gundam was added to its complement after the pilot surrendered and later joined the corps.
During the Second Alliance-PLANT War, Murrue remained in command of the unit, with Andrew Waltfeld as her executive officer, Kira Yamato leading the mobile suit forces, and Lacus Clyne and Cagalli Yula Athha functioning as advisors. Kira Yamato was the unit's primary mobile suit pilot during the First and Second Alliance-PLANT Wars. The mobile suit force centered around the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and MBF-02 Strike Rouge and was supported by several of the Orb Union's MVF-M11C Murasame and a FX-550 Skygrasper as a support unit. Later in the war, the Freedom was destroyed and Strike Rouge was damaged and replaced with the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam, ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam, and ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam.
By the time 75 C.E. Archangel was transferred to Compass. Even though it transferred, Murrue Ramius remained the captain of the Archangel and Mu La Flaga resumed command of the mobile weapon forces with his STTS/F-400 Murasame Kai. The unit remained in active service until the Archangel's destruction during the Foundation Conflict, and its crew transferred to the Millennium Corps.
History
Origins
The Archangel Corps was envisioned as the culmination of the Earth Alliance's G Project, with the Archangel serving as the unit's mother ship while its mobile suits: the Duel, Buster, Blitz, Aegis, and Strike formed the group's main combat force.
Battle of Heliopolis
Before the Archangel Corps was ever deployed into battle, ZAFT's Le Creuset Team had received information about the G Project's development at Heliopolis and launched a surprise attack. The ZAFT troops infiltrated the colony and placed time bombs around the hangar, intending to destroy the Archangel and its crew before moving to capture the mobile suits.[1] While the bombs killed most of the crew, the Archangel itself survived, with the few remaining personnel able to launch it. Afterward, the Le Creuset Team managed to steal four of the five G Project mobile suits, with the final machine, the Strike Gundam, remaining in Alliance hands.[2]
The Strike Gundam was initially piloted by Lieutenant Murrue Ramius, who secured it during the ZAFT raid on the Heliopolis factory. During the attack, Murrue brought with her a teenage civilian Coordinator, Kira Yamato, who was inside the factory at the time.[1] After escaping the collapsing factory, the Strike was attacked by a ZAFT GINN. After being pushed back and nearly defeated, Kira took control of the Strike from Murrue and rewrote its incomplete Operating System, allowing him to effectively pilot the mobile suit and swiftly defeat the GINN. After the initial battle, Kira and his friends treated Murrue's injuries, however, Murrue was forced to take them under her custody for witnessing the Strike, a top-secret military weapon.[2]
After regrouping with the Archangel and mobile armor pilot Mu La Flaga, Murrue took command of the remaining forces after learning that the intended captain of the Archangel had died in the explosions. With ZAFT forces still within the area and Mu's Moebius Zero needing repairs, the Archangel had to deploy the Strike Gundam for defense against ZAFT's mobile suits. As a result, Murrue was forced to conscript Kira into the OMNI Enforcer, with Kira being made the Strike Gundam's pilot. During the battle, Kira killed ZAFT ace pilot Miguel Aiman and briefly came into conflict with his best friend Athrun Zala, who piloted the Aegis Gundam. Meanwhile, the Archangel destroyed the other two GINNs, however, Heliopolis sustained considerable damage to its support structure throughout the battle, culminating in the total collapse of the colony at the battle's climax.[3]
Skirmish near Artemis
After Heliopolis' destruction, the Archangel Corps quickly reorganized to figure out their next actions. Meanwhile, on his way back to the ship, Kira found a damaged survival pod containing Heliopolis citizens; despite some disagreement from Natarle, Murrue reluctantly conceded to Kira's request and brought the Orb citizens aboard. With options limited, the ship running with a skeleton crew, carrying mostly civilians, and ZAFT forces nearby, the Archangel Corps decided to head for the nearby Eurasian Federation asteroid base Artemis to obtain their help. In hopes of tricking the Le Creuset Team, the Archangel launched several decoy missiles in an attempt to convince them they were traveling to the moon. However, not long after beginning their silent run, Le Creuset, having anticipated the Archangel's movements, decided to pincer Archangel, and positioned the Nazca-class Destroyer Vesalius in front of Artemis, while the Laurasia-class Frigate Gamow was to close in from behind. With a battle seeming inevitable and the Archangel left defenseless, Mu convinced Kira to continue piloting the Strike to protect his friends; with no other choice Kira agreed. In response, Miriallia Haw, Tolle Koenig, Sai Argyle and Kuzzey Buskirk had chosen to assist the Archangel as crewmen to support Kira.[4]
On approach to Artemis, Mu devised a plan for Kira to remain close to the Archangel to fend off ZAFT's mobile suits, while he stealthily made his way to the Vesalius and launched a surprise attack. Mu launched first in his Moebius Zero, avoiding detection by flying through the debris field while the Archangel fired its "Lohengrin" Positron Blaster Cannons at the Vesalius. In response, ZAFT deployed the four EA Gundams; the Gamow sent out Duel, Blitz, and Buster, while the Vesalius deployed the Aegis, to engage the Strike and attack the Archangel. Kira launched in the GAT-X105+AQM/E-X01 Aile Strike and confronted Athrun in the Aegis, who was soon joined by the Duel. Outnumbered and without proper training, Kira's continued use of his beam rifle rapidly drained his suit's battery. The Blitz and Buster focused on the Archangel, forcing the ship to deploy Anti-Beam Depth Charges to nullify their beam weaponry. One shot from the Buster got through and hit the hull, but its Laminated Armor dissipated the blast, leaving no damage. Meanwhile, Mu was discreetly maneuvering his Moebius Zero towards the Vesalius, where he launched a surprise attack and landed a crippling blow, significantly damaging the ship's engines. With Mu returning to the Archangel, Murrue ordered the ship's "Lohengrin" to fire on the Vesalius, and though the vessel evaded the shot, a glancing blow damaged the starboard wing, forcing Rau to order a retreat.[5]
With the Nazca-class out of action, Murrue ordered the Strike to return and for the Archangel to head to Artemis. To Kira's horror, as the Strike's beam rifle stopped firing, he learned he had drained his battery's energy, and the Phase Shift Armor powered down, leaving him helpless. Before the Duel could destroy him, Athrun transformed the Aegis into its Mobile Armor mode and captured the Strike. As the Le Cruset Team escaped with the Strike, Mu sent a message to the Archangel, asking for them to prepare the Launcher Striker Pack. As Athrun explained to Kira that he was taking him to the Gamow to force him to join ZAFT with the Strike, Mu and his Mobius Zero arrived, attacking the Aegis to force it to release the Strike. With the Strike released, Mu ordered Kira to rendezvous with the Archangel and get the Launcher Pack. With its remaining power and Natarle Badgiruel's expert timing, Kira was able to get the Launcher Pack before the Duel's rocket-propelled grenade made contact. Restored to full power, Kira fired the Strike's "Agni" Hyper Impulse Cannon, destroying the Duel's right arm and forcing the four mobile suits to retreat.[5]
Battle of Artemis
Following the skirmish, the Archangel arrived at the Eurasian asteroid base, hoping to be resupplied and make its way to the Moon. However, their welcome was less than inviting as the Archangel and its crew were immediately detained by the Eurasian personnel. While the crew and Orb civilians were held in the mess hall, the Archangel's officer corps, Murrue Ramius, Natalie Badgurel, and Mu La Flaga, were taken to meet Artemis' commander, General Gerard Garcia, who sought to use the opportunity to rise in position in the Earth Alliance by obtaining data on the Strike and interrogated the Archangel's crew to find out who was the pilot. Gerard initially dismissed the thought that Kira was the Strike's pilot, and tried to hit him in annoyance before being flipped over by the younger man. Afterward, Flay Allster revealed that Kira was a Coordinator, leading to Gerard taking Kira into custody and trying to force Kira to supply him with the mobile suit's technical data. While all this was occurring, the Le Creuset Team launched the GAT-X207 Blitz Gundam, which, using its Mirage Colloid Stealth System, successfully bypassed Artemis' defenses and infiltrated the base. Once in position, the Blitz began to systematically destroy Artemis' Lightwave Barrier projectors allowing for the Duel Gundam and Buster Gundam to join it. During the battle, the crew of the Archangel used the opportunity to escape from their Eurasian captors, while Kira in the Sword Strike Gundam engaged the Blitz Gundam inside Artemis. In the chaos, the Archangel was able to escape from the asteroid base, while the ZAFT forces abandoned the attack to pursue the fleeing Archangel.[6]
Entering the Debris Belt
After escaping Artemis and getting away from the Gamow, the Archangel Corps found itself critically low on supplies, primarily water. Having evaluated their options, the decision was made to travel to the Debris Belt and recover any available resources. They arrived on February 3, and upon entering the area, the crew immediately discovered the wreckage of the PLANT Colony Junius Seven and sent in a reconnaissance team. Despite some protests from the crew, the decision was made to scavenge any available resources from Junius Seven with Mistral mobile armors and bring them aboard the Archangel. While scouting the area, Kira Yamato briefly fought against a Reconnaissance GINN that, while on a mission, began attacking one of the Mistals, but was ultimately destroyed. Afterward, he discovered an active life pod near a wrecked ship and brought it with him to the Archangel, where the crew learned it contained Lacus Clyne, daughter of PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Siegel Clyne.[7]
Advance Force Battle and Hostage Situation
After leaving the Debris Belt with Lacus, the Archangel Corps made contact with an advance force of the 8th Space Fleet sent by Rear Admiral Halberton.[8] The Archangel intended to rendezvous with the force led by Captain Koopman, then join the main fleet above Earth. However, on February 7, the Le Creuset Team located and attacked the advance force before it met with the Archangel. Despite Koopman ordering the Archangel to leave immediately, Murrue ordered the ship to enter the battlezone and deployed Kira in the Aile Strike and Mu in his Moebius Zero to engage ZAFT’s mobile suits. However, while they quickly destroyed one of the Le Creuset Team’s GINNs, the Moebius Zero was damaged by the two remaining GINNs while the Strike was busy fighting the Aegis. This left the Vesalius open to destroy the Advance Force flagship, the Nelson-class battleship Montgomery, killing both Captain Koopman and Atlantic Federation Vice-Minister George Allster. As the ZAFT force moved in to target the Archangel, Ensign Natarle Badgiruel broadcasted a message stating they held Lacus Clyne in their custody and her life was in their hands, which immediately haunted the battle.[9]
Although the fighting had stalled, tensions remained high as Natarle's unilateral decision to use Lacus as a hostage caused consternation among the ship’s crew, especially Kira and Murrue. Regretful over the situation, Kira decided to free Lacus, sneaking her with him into the Strike and returning her to ZAFT through Athrun. Upon delivering Lacus, Athrun pleaded with Kira to abandon the Archangel and join them, but Kira rejected the offer, as he was committed to protecting his friends. Immediately afterward, when Le Creuset attempted to restart his attack on the Archangel, Lacus used her diplomatic authority to halt his advance, allowing the Archangel to depart the area safely.[10] Following the battle, Kira was subjected to a military trial by the Archangel's officers for unlawfully releasing Lacus, and was found guilty, but was able to avoid military execution due to being a civilian.[11]
