The F-41 Exoatmospheric Multirole Strike Fighter, also known as the Broadsword, is a versatile and well armed multi-role A/X strike fighter.[1]
Class History
Human-Covenant war
Sometime during the 2530s, the Broadsword would begin production.[1] Two were stationed at Casbah Station during the Battle of Tribute.[3]
Post-war
In 2554, the Budgetary Retention Hearings declared that Spartan pilots must wear Mjolnir Powered Assault Armor/Aviator armor when using the Broadsword.[4] This year also saw the introduction to the F-41E variant of the Broadsword.[2]
Several Broadswords were present at the commissioning of the UNSC Infinity.[5]
The Broadsword saw active duty during the First Battle of Requiem in defense of the crashed UNSC Infinity,[6] and some patrols when the UNSC destroyed the Gravity Well Generator.[7]
John-117 used an F-41E Broadsword from Ivanoff Research Station to breach the Mantle's Approach during the New Phoenix Incident.[8]
Broadswords were deployed against Type-31 Exoatmospheric Multi-role Fighters during the Second Battle of Requiem.[9]
Design
As its kind has few equals within the UNSC's arsenal, the Broadsword was designed to address the incredible firepower and speed displayed by the fighters of the Covenant such as the Seraph and Space Banshee.
Multiple variants can operate in different environments such as space[8][10] and in-atmosphere.[6][3]
Variants
Picture | Variant | Description |
---|---|---|
N/A | F-41E | A variant introduced in 2554. It included upgrades that couldn't be implemented during the Human-Covenant war. This included shielding, reworked Titanium-A paneling, and sensors that can process hundreds of targets.[2] The shielding was influenced by the Sabre that covers the entire fighter and designed to withstand a direct hit from a pulse laser and added after 2552.[11] These shields however are not rated for slipspace travel.[12] |
N/A | F-41D | A variant introduced sometime prior to October 2552. Cairo Station could hold ten.[10] |
Gameplay
The Broadsword is piloted by John-117 in the Halo 4 campaign level Midnight. This is the only time the Broadsword is usable. It functions similarly to the Sabre that is used in Halo: Reach.
Trivia
- This fighter is named after a sword like most of the UNSC fighters, such as the B-65 Shortsword, GA-TL1 Longsword and YSS-1000 Sabre.
- The Broadsword may be the successor of the Sabre as they seem to have similar roles and design.
- The Broadsword makes an appearance in the second-half of Spartan Ops Season One, as seen in the trailer.
