The Weekly — Week 342: Stormy Hallows |
---|
Actene has passed the torch. The days are spookier but not for very much longer. There's a chill in the air, but it might not be a ghost over your shoulder. The days are shorter and hot breath condenses in the open air. I apologize for starting the new Weekly off with a haphazard opening and little fanfare, but life got busier than I planned for. We will return to more regular scheduling for the Weekly with rotating judges by the Administration's choosing. For the next Weekly, our old friend Brodie-001 will be stepping up to the plate. I leave the theme and schedule to his discretion since we started late in the midweek. Thank you all for the patience as we continue to maintain one of the site's longest, hallowed traditions. Without locking into a particular festive mood or theme, write a short story this extended weekly period mixing horror with a secondary theme or literary device of your choosing. Explore an additional item while using horror as your vehicle. This way we get a late Halloween theme and we can do a little more with the November end date. The goal post will be 2000 words max. |

Random Good Article: Project SIGMA |
---|
Established in the early 26th Century, Project SIGMA was a little-known offshoot of the highly controversial SPARTAN-II Program. Established with many similar structures to its parent program, SIGMA featured a smaller number of recruits and was designed to create powerful supersoldiers that would serve the Office of Naval Intelligence alone. After the arrival of the Covenant meant that most of SIGMA's augmentees would be assigned to fight the alien threat, the Spartans spent decades fighting both on the frontlines and as part of numerous classified operations. While few survived the war and the project was ultimately shut down, SIGMA was responsible for producing some of the finest supersoldiers of its era. |

Fanon of the Month — October 2024: Scott Edwards |
---|
Scott Edwards (service number 25155-09242-SE) is a former Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. He served as the leader of Fireteam Wolf and its parent Combat Team Charlie during the Human-Covenant War, Created Conflict, and Battle of Zeta Halo. Born to Leoni and John Edwards in 2511, Scott and his home world of Cygnus II enjoyed years without significant strife or peril, relatively speaking. Though, while the violence of the Insurrection had yet to reach the system, the colony's population had little love for the UNSC. Especially as news of TREBUTCHET's ever increasing intensity and the UNSC's continued stripping of Colonial Military Authority responsibilities made headlines every other week. This culminated in the CMA being fully absorbed into the UNSC by 2525 with the news of an alien attack on Harvest. Scott's father, John, had been an officer in the CMA Navy himself, but had rejected the chance to transition into the UNSC when it was offered. John spoke little of what motivated this decision, and he was even less forthcoming on what he had experienced in his time in the CMA before that. But one night, when Scott was fourteen, he had found his father drinking alone and when John noticed his son, he asked the boy if he understood the difference between what was right, and what was just. At the time, the young man had no answer. John apologized, and insisted that it was best to forget he had said anything at all... |

Mythic Article of the Year: UNSC Eidolon by Ajax 013, Distant Tide and ThePeteFiles. |
---|
The UNSC Eidolon was a UNSC warship that saw service at the end of the Human-Covenant War, and beyond. Modified heavily by the Office of Naval Intelligence, she was used to support the UNSC's growing need for a long range, special forces support vessel. Despite her originally designed role, she would go on to partake in a number of operations, with her honours including supporting the Radio Beacon Deployment Program, delivering a strategic nuclear weapon for a retaliatory strike, and fighting in the siege of the Solar system itself. The Eidolon would go on to carve out an important legacy in the post-war period, supporting the UNSC's efforts against the myriad threats to their survival, and becoming a focal point of resistance during the Created Conflict. The legacy of the Eidolon left a permanent mark on the UNSC's doctrine in both naval service and as a commando ship. Read more»
