The Righteous Gemstones centers on a family of televangelists and megachurch pastors led by widowed patriarch Eli Gemstone. Eli and his bickering children, Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin live opulent lifestyles funded by their congregations' tithing, and work to expand their network of megachurches, making enemies of the pastors of existing churches, such as Rev. John Wesley Seasons. This expansion leads them to reconnect with Eli's estranged brother-in-law, "Baby" Billy Freeman, whom they tap to lead their newest church.
The first season also focuses on a blackmail plot orchestrated against Jesse by a trio of masked figures who threaten to expose videos of his lecherous private life, hatched by Jesse's estranged son, Gideon.
Season 2 of the show focused on Eli's past as well as his insistence on hanging onto being the lead pastor of the church, much to the chagrin of his children who are negotiating to succeed Eli in his ministry post. Jesse and Amber then enter into a business partnership with fellow megachurch pastors Lyle and Lindy Lissons, who own a similar church in Texas and try to recruit the Gemstones into funding a Christian family resort community in Florida.
Season 3 focuses on Eli's transition to retirement away from the church and handing over his responsibilities to his three children. The Gemstones' family and history is further delved into, leading to Eli's reunion with some estranged family members hiding some dark secrets. Jesse and Amber continue to take initiative in leading the church in Eli's place, while Judy and Kelvin both deal with conflicts of their own. Eventually, Eli manages to unite the siblings by getting them to work together against him, achieving his goal of seeing his children finally get along after their mother Aimee-Leigh passes.
