About the Rise of the Robots series
Rise of the Robots (commonly abbreviated RotR) is a series of fighting games created by Mirage. It is especially noted for its digitized sprites (which differentiated it from its contemporaries' hand-drawn sprites), and its mix of lubrication oil and electrical action; its graphic E-X-E-C-U-T-E-D destroying moves contributed to the founding of the ESRB.
The Rise of the Robots was developed as a reaction to the inspired Capcom fighting game Street Fighter II, with simpler controls and digitized graphics. The original idea of Rise of the Robots was thought up in 1990 along with storyline and game content, but not put to arcades until 1994 (and game systems). Some say the game's graphic was gratuitous, and was only included in order to generate a public outcry and controversy that would garner publicity for the game. Although highly controversial, the mix of realism and electrical propelled Rise of the Robots to widespread and future renown.
