Breaking Free: The Adventures of Dannen Lifehold

"Breaking Free: The Adventures of Dannen Lifehold" is a short story written by Dave Marron with illustrations by Doug Shuler. It was published in Star Wars Adventure Journal 1 in February 1994 by West End Games.

It is set in the Rise of the Empire era before the destruction of Alderaan.

Plot summary

The smuggler Dannen Lifehold has one last job before he can pay off his debt on his ship, the Lifeline, to the loan shark Linkaas. Lifehold arrives on Dohu VII to pick up this shipment, but, along the way, enters a drinking contest with the Silika Kenta Anwa. Thanks to Silika water not affecting humans, Lifehold easily wins the contest and impresses the bar.

However, his celebration is short-lived as Linkaas's henchmen, Bakk and Chokk, ambush him, intent on killing him before he can settle his debt. Linkaas’s plan is to eliminate Lifehold, seize his ship, and sell it off to someone else.

Just as Lifehold is about to be killed, Klin Anwa, Kenta’s brother, intervenes and saves him. Grateful for the help, Lifehold decides to make a hasty exit. On his way back to the Lifeline, he meets Purr, a genius Tinnell mechanic who has upgraded his ship without being asked. With Linkaas's goons still on their tail, Lifehold flees to Alderaan for a fresh start.
