Star Wars (2020) 28

For other uses, see Star Wars 28.

Star Wars 28 is the twenty-eighth issue of the 2020 canon comic book series Star Wars. The issue was written by Charles Soule, illustrated by André‎s Genolet and Rachelle Rosenberg, and published by Marvel Comics on October 12, 2022.

Publisher's summary

THE CALCULUS OF LOSS! The price of freedom is examined, as the Rebel Alliance comes to understand the true scope of the threat against it. Threepio enters into aggressive negotiations, and Luke Skywalker embarks upon a desperate mission that will test his growing Jedi skills to the limit.

Development

The scene in which Luke Skywalker meets Melton's family was inspired by the time Charles Soule met Mark Hamill, the actor who plays Skywalker, at New York Comic Con with a few of his friends and their kids. Soule added that like Skywalker in the issue, Hamill immediately bent down and greeted the kids, and noted their faces looked like those of Reen and Zelly in the issue.[3]

Continuity

The issue depicts Luke Skywalker informing rebel leaders Mon Mothma, Gial Ackbar, and Hera Syndulla about the Galactic Empire's construction of another Death Star. This contradicts Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, where the opening crawl establishes that Skywalker did not know of the construction.[4]

Plot summary

THE CALCULUS OF LOSS
Disillusioned with the evils of the Empire,
Lieutenant Melton and his wife, Bevelyn, serve as
double agents of Crimson Dawn. Qi'ra has
activated these agents, tasking them with
exposing the construction of a second Death Star
to the Rebel Alliance.

The couple and their children escaped the Death
Star aboard an Imperial shuttle but were
immediately detected. The defectors attempted to
make contact with the rebels, but their story was
dismissed.

Restricted to preprogrammed coordinates, the
family barely survived their crash landing on
Coruscant before encountering the Imperial
capital's underworld and security forces.
Fortunately, there is one member of the Rebel
Alliance who believes their desperate
transmission….

When we met him, Mark *immediately* bent down and greeted the kids first. Chatted, gave them all the time in the world. Their faces looked just like this." (backup link)
