The first eight seasons of Two and a Half Men follows Charlie Harper, a hedonistic jingle writer living in a beachfront Malibu abode, whose life is turned upside down when his brother Alan comes to live with him following a divorce, coupled with his nephew Jake visiting on the weekends. Charlie's ability to coast through life coupled with Alan's excessively uptight nature lead to them butting heads frequently. From the ninth season, Charlie dies while living overseas, and his house is bought by Internet billionaire Walden Schmidt. However, rather than kick Charlie and Jake out, he invites them to live with him, and the three form something of a makeshift family.
