- "One of the greatest Imperial successes of the Galactic Civil War came via the destruction of a significant rebel convoy in the Derra system…"
- ―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire
The ambush of a rebel convoy at Derra was a clash between the Alliance to Restore the Republic and Galactic Empire that occurred at the[1] Expansion Region astronomical object[3] Derra during the Empire's search for the rebel base after the Battle of Yavin. Although the ambush did not provide the Empire with the location of the base, it fit together with chatter about increased rebel operations in the region that had been tracked by Imperial Intelligence. Following the ambush, the Imperial search for the rebel base intensified.[1] According to the historian Beaumont Kin in his book The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, the battle saw Rae Sloane in command of the Star Destroyer Viligance and resulted in her promotion from Vice Admiral to the full admiral rank.[2] In reality, however, Sloane was still a commodore until the aftermath of the Battle of Hoth. She was granted command of the Vigilance in the post-Hoth period.[4]
Behind the scenes
The ambush of a rebel convoy at Derra was mentioned within the canon source Star Wars: Battles that Changed the Galaxy.[1] The battle comes from Star Wars Legends material, which depicted the engagement as the Battle of Derra IV.[5] This Legends battle had previously been referenced in canon through Star Wars Helmet Collection 3 as an ambush on Red Squadron.[6] However, no canon source has linked the ambush of a rebel convoy and the ambush on Red Squadron at this time.
More detail was provided about the battle in canon in the book Star Wars: The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire by Doctor Chris Kempshall, which is framed as an in-universe text by historian Beaumont Kin. According the book, the battle saw Rae Sloane promoted from the rank of Vice Admiral to a full admiral.[2] However, the short stories "The Final Order"[7] and "Lord Vader Will See You Now" establish she was still a commodore in the aftermath of the Battle of Hoth,[4] which occurs after the ambush. Further, the book alleges that Sloane was in command of the Vigilance during the battle,[2] which she only recieved command of in the short story "Lord Vader Will See You Now."[4] However, she did already have a history with the ship according to the video game Star Wars: Squadrons.[8]
