Phil LaMarr is an American actor, voice actor, comedian and writer, who has worked on several different projects, including Pulp Fiction and as a cast member of Mad TV, as well as several voiceover roles in the DC Comics Animated Universe, most notably providing the voice of Green Lantern John Stewart in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, the voice of Jack and various characters in Samurai Jack, the voice of Hermes Conrad and various characters in Futurama, the voice of Vamp in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and the voice of Black Vulcan in Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.
His Star Wars roles include Gadon Thek and additional voices in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Riiken and additional voices in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, and Jedi Master Kit Fisto, Amit Noloff, Senators Bail Organa, Orn Free Taa, Philo, and the tactical droids in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series. More recently, he did various voice work for the video game Star Wars: The Old Republic and reprised his role as Senator Organa in Star Wars: Rebels and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi.
His short stand-in voice work for Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series was unknown until 2020. For a long time only a person named BJ Hughes was credited as having voiced Jar Jar in three episodes of the series, where Ahmed Best didn't return to voice him. Until BJ Hughes was confirmed to have been an alias for LaMarr, the person behind the name remained an unsolved mystery.
Biography
- "Who is B.J. Hughes?"
- ―Jimmy Mac
In 2009, when asked by The ForceCast, Lucasfilm was unable to find out who BJ Hughes was.[1] In the following episode, when The ForceCast asked Dave Filoni who exactly BJ Hughes was, Filoni simply said that he replaced Ahmed Best as the voice of Jar Jar in the series and that that was about as far as he could go.[2] Best later stated in an interview that he had decided to move on to other projects midway through The Clone Wars, necessitating that the role be recast.[3]
In 2020, through a tweet Best referred to actor and comedian Phil LaMarr as the person who replaced him briefly as Jar Jar on The Clone Wars implying that Hughes is actually LaMarr.[4] In an Avatar: The Last Airbender rewatch panel on Twitch hosted by actor Dante Basco and Honor Society, LaMarr confirmed that he voiced Binks before Best returned to the role.[5][6][7][8]
