Polta bean

This article covers the Canon version of this subject.  Click here for Wookieepedia's article on the Legends version of this subject.

Polta beans[1] were a type of spherical brown[2] bean.[1] In 32 BBY,[3] the enslaved human Shmi Skywalker had a pan of polta beans cooking on the stove in the kitchen of her home in Slave Quarters Row in the city of Mos Espa on the planet Tatooine when she and her son Anakin Skywalker hosted the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, Queen Padmé Amidala, the Gungan Jar Jar Binks, and the astromech droid R2-D2 for a meal during a sandstorm.[1]

Behind the scenes

"Oh. I guess dreams must stay dreams for Malakili. Best get used to cooking only Polta beans."
―Malakili's dialogue upon refusal of the "Vegetable Variety" mission[4]

In the current Star Wars canon, polta beans were mentioned in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Complete Locations. It was part of material reprinted[1] from the 2000 reference book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Episode I, which was written by Kristin Lund and marked the first mention of the beans in the Star Wars Legends continuity.[5]

Although the books identify a pan[1][5] visible in the 1999 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace,[6] as containing polta beans,[1][5] the beans themselves are not visible in the film.[6] The contents of that pan were then pictured in the 2017 reference book Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia.[2]

In the 2022 non-canon video game LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, the former rancor keeper Malakili will mention polta beans should the player refuse to accept the mission "Vegetable Variety." The mission takes place following the demise of Malakili's employer Jabba Desilijic Tiure[4] in 4 ABY,[7] after which the keeper opened the vegetarian Crystal Moon Restaurant in the spaceport of Mos Eisley on Tatooine. Due to the lack of vegetables on the planet, Malakili will ask the player to bring him vegetables from other worlds, admitting that he currently only has polta beans to cook if they refuse.[4]
