R4 astromech droid,[11] also referred to as R4-series,[12] R4 unit,[13] or R4 agromech unit[14] was a model of R-series astromech droid manufactured by Industrial Automaton.[2] It was identical in appearance to the R2-series, except that its dome was conical instead of hemispherical. The official Press Corps of the Galactic Empire used repurposed R4 units as courier droids, as a means to physically transport data.[1]
The R4-P Astromech[15] was a modified model of the R4.[11] R4-P44, R4-P17, and R4-G9, were R4-P who had the dome of a R2 unit.[3]
The R4 courier droids, were modified R4 droids used by the Galactic Empire designed to be couriers, carrying information from one place to another, avoiding the use of networks.[16]
